R.I.P. Rose Laptop

Well, that's it. My RHIT laptop is kaput. Last December I spent $40 on memory and a new wireless card for a computer not worth $20, and now it's a paper weight. With all those stickers, I might be able to pass it off as modern art, slap on a $1200 price tag, and sell it through an art gallery; but that's unlikely.

I had troubles with the display, the same troubles that routinely popped up in college, but without IAIT I endeavored to fix it myself. Hoping it was a cabling problem (because I'm not paying $300 for a 6-year-old laptop's display) I dissembled the laptop just to inspect. As careful and meticulous as I thought I was, I turned the problem from discoloration to a perpetually blank screen, and soon came the sharks.

Now, my Rose laptop has an appointment with the boiler house. See you at Homecoming.

  1. That's funny, I was just wondering yesterday how much longer mine has. The screen flickers sometimes, but other than that, she's still going strong. I like the idea of a graveyard of corrosive batteries, heavy metals, and broken glass around the Boiler House. I'll bring the bagpipes.

  2. Yeah, I've been worried about the same thing. It runs really hot and takes a while to load things it didn't used to take so long on. I have the issue with the wireless getting me a BSOD, but if I buy a wireless adapter, I know somehow it'll destroy my laptop...I've been eyeing some netbooks/notebooks just in case.

  3. Ya'all are lucky. My laptop died the second IAIT stopped servicing it. I've still got it though, and I was thinking that scum pond would be a good graveyard...

  4. As a former IAIT representative, I am obligated to give the "I'm sorry, but we couldn't find a problem" excuse ;-)

I must say, though, 6 years with that POS is impressive.

And Thiede... take out the two screws holding the bezel above the keyboard, pop out the bezel with a small flat head screw driver, pull up the keyboard towards you, and blast the fan with canned air. It should run cooler afterward.
